Pontrieux, Brittany: Settled in medieval times, this "small town of character" is known for its half-timbered and dressed stone houses that date from the 16th to the 19th century and some 50 washhouses along the River Trieux that flows through the heart of town. The town's 18th century fountain still flows today, a popular watering spot for both people and horses.
