San Francisco, CA: A Peter Witt vintage trolley from Milan rolls down the F-Line that loops and links Market Street, the Ferry Building, and Fishermen's Wharf.
From the Market Street Railway website: "In addition to its world-famous cable car fleet, the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) owns some ninety historic streetcars, trolleys, and trams (names used in different parts of the world to describe electric rail vehicles capable of running on city streets). About half of these streetcars are in active service, or being prepared for it; the remainder are currently non-operational, unrestored cars that could be used for future service expansion.
Three general types of vintage streetcars are used in San Francisco: a collection of unique vintage cars from both San Francisco and around the world; streamlined art deco PCC streetcars from the 1940s and 1950s that provide the backbone of daily service; and 1920s Peter Witt trams from Milan, Italy, which also operate daily.
This older type of streetcar was designed by Cleveland transit leader Peter Witt and ran in many US cities, though never in San Francisco. Milan, Italy built hundreds of Peter Witts in 1928 and are still running some today. Muni got one car, No. 1834, as a Trolley Festival gift in 1984 and liked it so much they obtained ten more in 1998 to meet the huge F-line rider demand.
The Peter Witts entered Muni service still wearing the solid orange livery used in Milan for the past quarter-century. In 2004, however, car No. 1811 was repainted into the original 1928 Milan livery of yellow and white with black trim. In 2007, No. 1818 received the two-tone green livery that the Milan trams wore from the 1930s to the 1970s. Market Street Railway has suggested to Muni that as these cars are repainted, the fleet is balanced between the three historic Milan liveries (yellow, green, and orange).
Some of the Milan trams retain their original Milan fleet numbers; others have had the second digit changed to 8
