Ninilchik, AK: White wood crosses, surrounded by fireweed and flowers, mark graves in the beautiful Russian Orthodox cemetery that tops the hill above town. The name of this picturesque fishing community on the Kenai's west coast means "peaceful settlement by a river." Located approximately 40 miles south of Soldotna, it was settled in the early 1800's by Russian colonists. Some of the old buildings still exist in the Ninilchik village and many descendants of the old families still live here.
