Wittenberg, Saxony: Exhibit in the Luther House, "The Ten Commandments" by Cranach the Elder. Lutherhaus is the largest museum of Protestant Reformation history in the world.
From information card with painting: "In 1516 Lucas Cranach the Elder is commissioned by the town council to create a painting for the courtroom in the old town house. Individual scenes are displayed like a broadsheet. In most cases the obedience and disobedience of a given commandment are shown simultaneously. Depictions of angels and devils -- personifying good and evil -- highlight the respective statements. The nobleman not only catches the observer's eyes because of his magnificent clothes, but because he seems to violate the commandments most frequently. At that time when this painting was created Luther was preaching about the Ten Commandments and drawing large crowds of parishioners."
From Reformation Tours LLC website re Luther House: "It was in 1508 that Luther, as an Augustinian monk, first lived in this large home. It had been built Frederick the Wise and is a magnificent example of late medieval architecture. When the monastery was closed, Frederick the Wise gave the home to Luther and his family.
"The Luther House is now the largest museum for reformation history in the world. In the collection, there are about 15,000 books and pamphlets from the 16th - 18th centuries, about 13,000 individual sheets from the 16th - 20th centuries, 6,000 original manuscripts from the 11th - 19th centuries, about 1,600 coins and medallions, 135 paintings, 50 incunabula (early printed book) and one of a kind pieces. The museum also houses many portraits of the Reformer and his contemporaries by such great artists as Cranach."
