Ninilchik, AK: The "Polly" and another old wreck of a fishing boat rest on their laurels in the weeds above the Ninilchik River estuary. The name of this picturesque fishing community on the Kenai's west coast means "peaceful settlement by a river." Located approximately 40 miles south of Soldotna, it was settled in the early 1800's by Russian colonists. Some of the original buildings still exist in the Ninilchik village and many descendants of the old families still live here. Note the onion-domed Russian Orthodox church on the bluff above town.
