Ninilchik, AK: Golden yellow onion dome steeples marked with three-bar crosses top the Transfiguration of Our Lord, a small Russian Orthodox church on a hill above town. The name of this picturesque fishing community on the Kenai's west coast means "peaceful settlement by a river." Located approximately 40 miles south of Soldotna, it was settled in the early 1800's by Russian colonists. Some of the old buildings still exist in the Ninilchik village and many descendants of the old families still live here.
